The ANCIENT GREEKS

Advanced Warning - next week (after finishing our Instructional Writing work) we are starting our new theme, The Ancient Greeks.

This theme will be really interesting and is already getting Mr Watson excited.

I really want our classroom to feel alive during our next theme. Can you help?
Have you got any books on the Ancient Greeks?
Have you got any artefacts or objects related to Ancient Greece and the Greeks?
Any Greek artwork?Photography? Artefacts? Posters? Crafts?

I've already gathered loads of books from the library and our topic box, as well as buying a few more too.

If you have anything it would be great to share with it with the class. Remember to ask for permission first!

If you want to have a sneak preview then ckeck out this webiste to begin some background reading and research:

Our very own bread - 5JW Bake in style!

WOW ! WOW! WOW!

That's what I want to say! A massive well done to the whole class for the fantastic bread making efforts today. Mr Watson is particularly pleased with how sensible and safe every body was today.

We had a great time making our bread and each pair/trio made a very different kind of bread.

Tell me all about whether the breads tasted as good as they looked and smelled!

Asheigh is in Dream City

This is my favourite Paul Klee painting. It is called dream city. I like it because the way he has used the same shape is amazing! When i found it on display in class I just adored it. I would like to thank Mrs H. for such a fantastic display.

Bread making - Our demonstration and planning session

Today we investigated bread making by making our very own loaf of white bread. This was preparation for making our own bread later in the week.
We talked through our 'revolting recipes' homework and looked at layouts at styles of various recipes.

We then followed a simple recipe for making bread. Mr Watson followed the recipe with help from the class.

Whilst the dough was resting and cooking we worked in pairs to write our instructions for our own bread - choosing any additional ingredients we want to add.

We then tasted and enjoyed eating our class loaf. Mr Watson was relieved that it all went well - even if we did use a bit too much yeast. We all agreed that bread was pretty tasty.

I wonder how the rest of the bread will taste later this week?

5JW....to the Holy Lands

Monday 27th October

Today 5JW visted the art exhibition entitled 'To the Holy Lands' at DIFC.

The exhibtion was enjoyable and was beautifully presented. It consisted of many old photographs taken over a hundred years ago, well before the age of digital photogrpahy that we use today.

The subjects of the photographs were all pilgrims (Muslims, Jews and Christians) making various pilgrimages (special journeys) to the 'Holy Lands'.

We looked carefully at the photo's some of buindings and some of people.

WHICH PHOTO DID YOU LIKE BEST? WHY?

Our guides answered lots of our questions and we had to complete a worksheet.
We talked about timelines and history. We all made predictions of what could hapen in the future. We also chose items we would take if we were to go on a pilgrimage or long journey.

WHAT ITEMS WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?

The photographs were displayed in a lovely way.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT THE PRESENTATION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS AND WHY?

We enjoyed our visit and found it interesting.
HAVE YOY ANY OTHER COMMENTS ABOUT THE GALLERY, PHOTOGRAPHS OR VISIT?

Lisa Willis (Nutritional therapist) says....

Dear 5JW,

Hello from England!!!
My name is Lisa Willis. I am one of Mr Watsons friends, we were at University together many years ago! These days my job is as a Nutritional Therapist which means I teach people which foods are good to eat so that they have a balanced diet and are healthy, happy and full of energy.

I have been looking at your class blog (which is really cool) and was really interested to see that you have been investigating breads. It looks like you had lots of fun tasting all those different breads. I was wondering which one was your favourite, were there any that you didn't like?

Did you know that some breads are better for you than others? Brown and wholemeal bread contain more vitamins (which keep you healthy) than white bread and help you feel full of energy for longer. Some people are allergic to the wheat used to make bread and feel poorly if they eat bread. The good news is that there are some breads that are not made from wheat such as rye bread, so people who are allergic to wheat can still enjoy toast and sandwiches. Did you try rye bread in your investigations?

I look forward to seeing what else you get up to in class. Keep up the good work 5JW!

best wishes,
Lisa Willis

5JW Bread Investigation

Have a look at our bread investigation photo's. We had lots of different breads from all around the world. We looked at the shape and size of the breads, commented on their colour, weight, texture and then, of course ,we tasted them. After the hungry monsters in 5JW got going soon there was none left at all!

Make your comments about our photo gallery.

As you can see there were lots of happy faces - it was like feeding time at the zoo!!!!

Mr Watson is very happy - not only did we have a brilliant atmosphere in class and enjoyed the investigation but he has also finally worked out how to have photos of our work on a loop on the blog.

Rose's King of the Week Blog Post

Hi, it's Rose from 5JW.
I am the new king of the week!

In class we have been doing presentation sheets about healthy living, we have also been reading a book called The Magicians Nephew, which I really enjoy! In ICT we have been using the laptops to go onto a fun site using the smart boards.

I can't wait until International Day, this is where Mr Watson picks a country for us to dress up as or we can represent our home towns by for example: if I was from England I could wear a English football shirt!

I have settled in really well and made lots of new friends in 5JW. I enjoy my time at school!I wonder who will be the next king of the week??

SMOKING - Should it be banned? THE GREAT DEBATE

"This House beleives that smoking should be banned forever."

Wow! Quite frankly the best day of year 5 so far - the Great Debate. Mr Watson, Mr O'Neill and Mrs Hislop are absolutely delighted with the pupils of year 5.

Both classes (5JW & 5KON) should be really proud of their attitudes, performances and maturity today. The task was tricky and needed good preparation, concentration, listening and lots of effort - but what a performance. I was so pleasantly surprised by both the content of the debate as well as the manner in which all of the year group conducted themselves.

We divided the year group up into house groups with Stuarts and Tudors proposing the motion and Windors and Hannovers opposing it. What made the debate even more tricky was the fact that in some cases people were having to present a viewpoint that they may not fully agree with. This in itself is a really challenging thing to be able to do.

Children from both sides had some forthright and strongly held views on this topical discussion. An array of debating techniques were used throughout the debate. Children clearly listened to other viewpoints and responded appropriately.

During the discussion we all agreed that the facts do speak for themselves - Smoking is extremely dangerous and is not healthy for us in any way.

However the debate around freedom of choice, consideration to others, social & economic consequences of such a ban etc were in depth and realistic. Rhetorical questioning, emotive language, use of real life characters and situations were just some of the range of skills on show today.

The thing that impressed bothMr. O'Neill , Mrs Hislop and myself the most though was how ready you all were to engage in debate. Mr Obama and Mr Mc Cain could have learnt a lot in year 5 today!

Stuarts and Tudors
Main arguements for the banning of smoking everywhere:
- The health risks. 120, 000 people die in the UK each year because of smoking related illnesses.
- Roy Castle died of lung cancer and yet never smoked a cigarette in his life
- Why should the tax payer have to continue to pay such a heavy bill for smokers?
- Lots of folk smoke and due to poor education or ignorance - they aware unaware of the damage that they are doing to themselves and those around them.
- Cigarette butts litter the environment and have caused further loss of life through quickly spreading fires.

Hanovers and Windsors
Main arguements against the abolition of smoking:
- In the freedom of ones own home and when consideration for others is taken into account - if someone still wishes to smoke that is their perogative.
- Tobacco growing countries and their economies would crumble over night
- No one wants to see an illegal black market trade of cigarettes
- The man who has worked in the tobacco factory for 20years is now suddenly out of a job and maybe unemployable

Both sides agreed on a number of issues and an ammended motion is being implemented as we speak.

Mr. O'Neill and I would like to thank the children today for what we beleive was the highlight of Yr5 this year to date. In every case, the children argued their case with respect and courtesy, with thought and care. They debated with vigour but were mature enough to concede certain points of the debate in order for the house to reach a compromise.

A great debate - Very well done Year 5!

International Day - CLUE 1

Your first clue:

Order and Progress

International Day

Kings' is having an International Day on the 30th November 2008. Each teacher and class is choosing their own country to investigate.

In 5JW Mr Watson has chosen.......... Ah! not telling you that yet!!

Over the next few weeks I'll be giving you some hints and clues to my chosen country...watch the blog closely to have first chance to make your guess. Who will guess correctly? Who will be the first to work out which country I will be studying.

We will team up with 5KON and both Year 6 classes to have a carousel of activities - learning all about 4 different countries from around the world. We will all be wearing costumes from our chosen countries or our home country to make the day even more entertaining and authentic.

Who is Paul Klee?

Paul Klee? Paul Who I hear you ask!

See if you can do a search and find any information about him and his work.

Let 5JW know what you think about him by leaving comments on this post.

I've given you one useful link but I'm sure that you can find many more.

Good luck researching!

Adrian Hayes visits Kings' Dubai

KS2 pupils (including 5JW) had a treat on 8th October 2008. Living legend Adrian Hayes spoke to us in assembly about his amazing achievements. Adrian is only the 15th man in the entire world to have climbed Mount Everest as well as reaching the North and South Poles. He showed us videos and photos as well as telling us all about his three expeditions - everything from the dangers, the preparartion, the food he ate and how to go to the toilet!

He was very funny and very informative. He told us that his message was one of overcoming challenges - things in life can be difficult. Our attitude and our determination is key to success.

His achievements are incredible. A true inspiration to us all.

Becky's Blog. King Becky says:

Hi 5JW, this week we have done loads of cool things in class! Some people were finishing presentations (which are looking great) while others were sketching an object and some were just reading quietly in the corner. At the moment our class story is The Magician’s Nephew, which so far is very enjoyable, even though some people have already read it. Being king of the week is really fun and Mr Watson always has some jobs for you to do. Thanks for all the lovely comments, they really make me smile. King of the week is a very special thing to be and I’m lucky to be the first one (apart from Clarence) to be king of the week. I wonder who it will be next?

PE & SWIMMING DAYS
